Our Independence Day: Juneteenth Special
On June 19, 1865 the news of emancipation reached the last group of enslaved Black individuals in America. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is a commemoration of Black history, as we should take the day every year to reflect on the strength, courage, and perseverance of our ancestors.
Juneteenth is our independence day.
Juneteenth is also a recognition that as Black people, we still have so much work to do. 2020 in particular has been turbulent for Black people, as it has proven we are still entrenched in a battle for the sanctity of our own livelihood.
